about
This was written during the depths of an historic drought in california. It kind of languished not entirely finished for a little, then i was inspired by the actions at Standing Rock to get it into a more complete form.
Mahadev performed it a few times live in 2018, and I performed it several times with the Cipriani/Payne duo until the end of 2019. The recording was started in fall 2020 and the various players did their parts through the spring of 2021, it was mixed in July by Clinton Patterson, but i wanted to wait until spring to release it.
lyrics
music & lyrics by Dave Cipriani
the reservoir is dry, but the rain will come (3x)
spring flowers bloom in lavender and sage
fragrances sweet drift by your face
desert time is here, the sun blinds your eye
a light so bright, you want to run & hide
the elders will lead us in the sacred dance
show us the meaning of the sacred trance
the tongue of flame says to burn it all
but we bloom instead, we will not fall
the reservoir is dry, but the rain will come (3x)
do your rain dance! sing your rain ragas!
dark times are here, as they had told us!
the grey clouds you see show it has begun
sing once again the old songs they’ve sung!
the reservoir is dry, but the rain will come (3x)
come prophets, come!
return from the desert
walk out to the sand
and ride this wind
the blistering heat we cannot stand
but it’s the rain at your command!
the reservoir is dry, but the rain will come (3x)
bundle up your sage, for we’ll burn it all!
purify you mind, wail at the wall
the reservoir is dry, but the rain will come
fear not the rays of the desert sun
